Basic Photography Class
Fall 2009

The purpose of this class is to provide the student with and understanding and working knowledge of modern digital cameras and basic principles of photography. Optional field trips are provided to help the student and provide one on one coaching. This class is not a class on how to use your specific camera as all cameras have controls in different places.

Recomended equipment:  Digital SLR camera or Point and Shoot camera with ability to do manual settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO); usb drive to bring pictures into class with.

Session 1
Sept 9, 2009

Discussion of photography in today’s world i.e. 50% is post processing, picture quality, resolution, size of pictures; Types of software to process pictures. Basic tools needed to process pictures.

Discussion of camera types:  P&S vs SLR, Brands of cameras. Megapixels and how much is needed. Ability to carry camera around at the expense of picture quality, ability to change lenses etc.  Various card media types and sizes will be discussed.

Discussion of preset camera modes – action, landscape, macro, portrait, night portrait, Shutter priority, aperture priority, manual.

Basic workflow from camera through post processing to putting pictures on USB to bring to class. Using Adobe Bridge to rank pictures for selection.

Discussion on lenses, characteristics of lenses and how to employ these lenses to your situation. Discussion on tripods and monopods. Tips on what to look for when purchasing a tripod or monopod and how to use them.
