Basic Photography Class

The purpose of this class is to provide the student with and understanding and working knowledge of modern digital cameras and basic principles of photography. Optional field trips are provided to help the student and provide one on one coaching.

Recomended equipment:  Digital SLR camera or Point and Shoot camera with ability to do manual settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO); usb stick.

Session 1
June 17, 2009

Discussion of photography in today’s world i.e. 50% is post processing, picture quality, resolution, size of pictures; Types of software to process pictures. Basic tools needed to process pictures.

Discussion of camera types:  P&S vs SLR, Brands of cameras. Megapixels and how much is needed. Ability to carry camera around at the expense of picture quality, ability to change lenses etc.  Various card media types and sizes will be discussed.

Discussion of preset camera modes – action, landscape, macro, portrait, night portrait, Shutter priority, aperture priority, manual.

Basic workflow from camera through post processing to putting pictures on USB to bring to class. Using Adobe Bridge to rank pictures for selection.

Field Trip
June 20, 2009

8:00am Waikiki – meet at zoo parking lot
A walk through Waikiki to give students opportunities to become familiar with the camera and controls with one-on-one assistance.


Session 2
June 24, 2009

Review and critique images from Waikiki field trip. Answer questions concerning trip & use of cameras.
Class discussion will be on exposure (aperture vs shutter speed vs ISO) .

Session 3
July 1, 2009

Discussion on Composition– rule of thirds, depth of field, vertical vs horizontal
2nd hour will be on equipment i.e. lenses, tripods, filters, remote shutters, flash etc.

Field Trip

Aloha Tower Shoot – 6:00pm – Meet at Aloha Tower, upper level
Optional shoot at Aloha Tower to photograph fireworks display. Bring flashlight, tripod (if you have one).

Review and critique images from Aloha Tower Shoot
Discussion will be on macro shooting & lighting;
How to display your pictures (website, printing and framing tips etc.)
