Huaka‘i to the Wai‘anae Coast - March 15, 2024

The best informational tour of the Waianae Coast that I have ever been on. Sponsored by the Honpa Honwanji Hawaii Betsuin, got on a JTB tour bus rented by the Honwanji and travelled out to Waianae.

PURPOSE OF THE HUAKA'I
It has long been recognized that Buddhism and Hawaiian spirituality have a lot in common. Both reference interrelationship, impermanence, community/family and sense of place,`aina and natural process, aloha and compassion as essential concepts and values.

Uncle Glen Kila, community leader, cultural and religious practitioner, retired DOE teacher and School Principal, was the host and shared his ‘ike (knowledge) and stories about his homeland of Wai‘anae and the intersection between our cultural and spiritual traditions. Uncle Glen Kila’s genealogical connection to Wai‘anae is centuries old.

This event, along with the Mary Mikahala Foster Concert and the Queen Lili‘uokalani Ho‘oku‘ikahi Reconciliation Service (the interfaith commemoration of the overthrow of Queen Lili‘uokalani), are part of a movement to restore the legacy of Mary Mikahala Foster and forge closer relations between Honpa Hongwanji and the Hawaiian Community.
